Nicaragua Jinotega
Tasting Notes: Orange - Maple - Cinnamon - Fig
Nicaragua's Jinotega region is renowned for its high-quality coffee, known for its rich flavor profiles and distinctive characteristics. Located in the northern highlands of Nicaragua, Jinotega is often referred to as the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes" because of its unique geography, which provides ideal conditions for growing coffee.
The region’s coffee is cultivated in rich volcanic soil at high altitudes, between 1,100 and 1,700 meters (3,900 to 4,900 feet) above sea level. This high elevation, along with a temperate climate, results in slow-growing coffee plants that produce beans with complex flavors. The combination of mild temperatures, regular rainfall, and volcanic soil allows for the development of coffee with bright acidity, medium body, and vibrant fruity and floral notes.
Jinotega is often celebrated for its washed (wet) process coffees, which highlight the clean and crisp flavors of the beans. Many coffees from this region are grown under shade, which helps preserve the delicate ecosystems and contributes to the overall quality of the beans.
Nicaraguan Jinotega coffee is often characterized by flavors such as citrus, maple, and cinnamon and fig, with subtle hints of chocolate and caramel. These beans have gained recognition for their well-balanced, aromatic profiles.
Jinotega, along with other Nicaraguan regions like Matagalpa, has become an important player in the specialty coffee world, known for its high standards in cultivation and processing, and its focus on sustainable farming practices.
